Beyond their nationwide impact, Manufacturing USA institutes are crucial drivers of economic development in regional economies. For example, CyManII is bolstering San Antonio's reputation as Cyber City, America Makes is revitalizing the Youngstown, Ohio area, and PowerAmerica is fueling growth in North Carolina's Research Triangle. Several institutes are also spearheading the redevelopment of former industrial sites, such as NIIMBL at the site of a former Chrysler factory and AFFOA in New England's historic textile corridor. By strengthening these regional economies, the institutes are not only helping to rebuild communities, but also ensuring that economic growth is more evenly distributed across the country. Notably, two of these institutes are leading the implementation of the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) Build Back Better initiative, further amplifying their role in regional economic transformation.
Building the Global Epicenter for Regenerative Manufacturing
The federal government officially designated “ReGen Valley”, the home of BioFabUSA, as a national Tech Hub. This honor recognizes the region’s capacity to become the world’s epicenter of biofabrication, generating inclusive economic growth and benefitting the nation and the globe. This innovation ecosystem provides a unique continuum of capabilities purposefully established by BioFabUSA, and this is drawing biofabrication companies to found and grow adjacent to the Institute’s campus. BioFabUSA’s wrap-around regulatory and commercialization approach also speeds regulatory advancement and de-risks development of novel technologies, fueling innovation and clarifying pathways to market.

De-Risking Robotics Through Regional Influence
The ARM Institute headquarters are in Mill 19 in the Hazelwood area of Pittsburgh, as is the institute’s Robotics Manufacturing Hub. The Hub’s mission is to help de-risk the adoption of advanced robotics and automation technology for small and medium-sized manufacturers. The EDA funding also helps the ARM Institute support four innovation accelerators in an 11-county region.
